There are two new films hitting theatres this week and they couldn’t be more different. First up is Mortdecai, Johnny Depp’s latest spy comedy. Depp plays the title Character Lord Charlie Mortdecai who is recruited by Ewan McGregor to help the British government recover a stolen painting that may in fact contain the code to a bank account filled with Nazi gold. Sounds like a solid, if somewhat familiar premise. The film also features Gwyneth Paltrow as Depp’s wife Johanna, Paul Bettany as Jock the Manservant and Olivia Munn as Georgina, a well-known nymphomaniac who might have a few secrets of her own. There are two spy spoofs (the other being Kingsmen: the Secret Service) hitting theatres this year, the same year that we get new installments of my two favourite spy franchises (James Bond and Mission Impossible). The film’s director is David Koepp whose previous films include Stir of Echoes, Secret Window (also with Depp), Ghost Town and 2012’s Premium Rush, his only other action film to date. Koepp is a talented screenwriter who has proven that he can direct a picture, but will he be able to balance an action comedy and not sink too far into one or the other? Judging from the trailer the film appears to be much more of a comedy then anything else but then again trailers can be misleading. https://youtube/watch?v=aW_sfxUnbZA
