There are two places that I have traveled to that remind me of my Puerto Rico - Cuba and Panamá. The first time I traveled to Panamá was on April 2, 1993 with Rubén Blades and Son del Solar for a series of concerts. I admit that I am biased when it comes to Rubén Blades. I have known him for thirty-eight years and have played his music on my radio program “¡Con Salsa!’ during this period of time. Because of his songs my Puerto Rican perspective has grown to embrace a Latino world beyond my native Island. Thanks to Rubén I have traveled not only to Panamá, but Venezuela, and Colombia, among other places. I have grown as a man, a Puerto Rican, a Latino, and a human being, in many ways because of his music, socially conscious lyrics and political stands. I have the utmost respect and admiration for him, and affection for him as a human being with all of the complications, contradictions, and issues that come with being who we are. Tonight, as a prelude to the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th - October 15th) a set of songs by Rubén dedicated to Panamá....I invite you to enjoy and share his love and pride for his "Patria" (Motherland).
