There has been a surge in cases of canine leptopirosis infection in the Chicago area. Lepto is a bacterial infection carried by wildlife which can cause serious kidney infections and may even be transmitted to humans. Melting snow and ice leave puddles which can contain the bacteria. Keep your dog away (not easy!) from puddles and wet areas, and make sure your dog is current on the leptopirosis vaccination. It is a core vaccination at Markham Animal Clinic.
