There has been much debate about the likelihood of rising temperatures causing catastrophic release of methane and other natural gasses now held hostage in permafrost and in the ocean in the form of clathrates - mixtures of ice and methane trapped within its crystalline structure. Im less sanguine about this than others - systems like this tend to be highly unstable and tipping points are unpredictable. Siberia is an enormous place but in this day and age its still hard to imagine something this big could have gone unnoticed for so long.
