There has been much discussion/debate over the origin of the artist who painted Edward Austen Knights portrait that hangs at Chawton House Library. It has never been attributed, though it is highly suspected to have been painted in 1788 by Ozias Humphry, the same year as a unidentified portrait of Jane Austen, entitled The Rice Portrait. By pure chance, I ran across this portrait of Sir, Home Riggs Popham today and was so struck by the similarity of style, symbolism and attitude that it just screamed at me to compare it to the Austen Knight portrait. What is your first reaction? I was particularly drawn to the shoes of the two gentleman. Both of these portraits could be keys to discovering the artist of The Rice Portrait of Jane Austen, which is also under heated debate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rice_portrait en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Austen_Knight en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Riggs_Popham
