There has been quite a lot stated recently about minimum wages being increased. Our President signed an order that new Federal Government contracts must pay persons who work under those contracts a minimum of $10.10 an hour. This only affects new contracts and does nothing to raise the wages of those who already are working under a contract with the fed, nor dies it affect their wages if the contract they are currently working under is renewed. In other words they get no increase in their pay. IMHO the president signed this order for a photo-op pre SOTU speech s it would be something he could say he did to help American workers. Ive been in several discussions of late with both those who are in favor and those who like me are opposed to raising the minimum wage. Those in favor tell me it should be raised to keep up with the cost of living, because it has not been raised in 4-5 years and to put more money in peoples pockets, that people are staying in minimum wage jobs due to a poor economy and lack of opportunity. They have sited those with college degrees working in minimum wage positions because they cant find jobs in their chosen fields. My argument against raising minimum is that I want government to stay out of businesses. I believe that for our government to tell an employer how much to pay their staff is overstepping their responsibility; it also tells employers that they cannot be trusted to pay a fair wage. It is on that principal that I would like to see minimum wage abolished. Let the job market determine wages; employers hire because they want a employee not because an individual wants a job. Minimum wage is for individuals who are at entry level to the job market; often hired with no skills or experience and often little education. When they gain skill, experience, education and prove themselves to be an asset to their employer then they can ask for a raise. Most companies give merit raises annually based on employee performance. I think if you want a better wage you need to develop skill, be willing to learn and take on additional responsibilities, be dependable, be an asset to your employer, make yourself indispensable. I have experience both as a manager and as a supervisor; if you come in to your job with a good attitude, do good work and make your employer look good you will get a raise in wages. Here are few tips on how you can get your employer to give you a good raise: 1. When a customer says something nice about a service you provided ask them to write out a brief note regarding how you made their experience positive and give that note to your immediate supervisor. 2. When you go above and beyond your normal scope of duty ask your supervisor to note it in your file, and give you a copy. If you have good management they will make effort do so anyway but asking insures that it does not get forgotten. Most good supervisors and managers use these comments when preparing an annual review and recommending you for a raise. 3. If you feel that you should have gotten a better raise say so, toot your own horn and say why. Management will often take another look at your file and give you a better raise. 4. If you still feel you are being underpaid look for another job that will pay you more and when you find one ask for the offer and salary offer in writing. If you dont want to change jobs take formal offer to your current employer and see if they will match or better the offer. Once you have job skills, experience and education make sure to cite it on your resume and use as your basis to negotiate the starting wage you think you should be paid.
