There has been some discussion about why the music of the Bossa Nova Beatniks does not sound like what we know a Bossa to be. Agreed. Here is the story. We used to be the Flyboys until we learned that there was already a band in San Diego called the Fly Boys. For a moment we considered changing our name to “The San Diego Fly Boys.” One day at practice, we were about to practice a Tom Gould song when our bass player Robert O’Rourke, went up to the microphone and said “And now for the Bossa Nova Beatnik sound of Tom Gould.” We all looked at each other as we often did with Bob, who had the gift of pulling phrases out of the air. Well, the name stuck. We looked into the philosophy of the Bossa Nova. What people know as Bossa Nova as created by Antonio Carlos Jobim (‘Tom’) was originally formed from a hybrid of mixing the Blues and the Samba to form a new genre called Bossa Nova. In keeping with that philosophy, the Bossa Nova Beatniks are all about making new music through hybridization of many and any styles of music. We love the music of Jobim and encourage everyone to discover Brazilian music. By the way, we aren’t really Beatniks either, other than that we use bongos and emphasize the lyrical content of our songs and played one of our first public appearances at Gunther’s Bar in Northport where Jack Kerouac used to drink. In the meantime, enjoy this song that has a traditional Bossa beat with a New York City spin. youtube/watch?v=oXZFJwsDTbw
