There have been many tributes, commentaries, and observations regarding the death of Robin Williams since yesterday. We each have our own perspectives and expressions of shock and grief over this tragedy. To those who have no personal reference point to what severe clinical depression and the serious, personal damage it causes daily in the lives of those who are afflicted, whether you know it or not, there are a number of them in each of your lives. If youre aware of who they are, then youve helplessly observed the patterns and cycles these people go through. We should all be aware, particularly those of us who are diagnosed with such extreme mental incapacity, that withdrawal of contact from others and the ambivalence toward important day to day personal responsibilities are the most alarming of any symptomatic cry for help. I know that personally. I know how tiring and discouraging the repetition of the never ending cycle becomes, especially after years and years of the same by someone who has lived with it for 63 years, just as Robin Williams and I have. More and more often as someone ages, the recurring cycle becomes unbearable to hear from inside ones head and the personal self-dialogue, when crying deep sobs and speaking it out loud yet once again to caring friends whove heard it far too often, when knowing that others have abandoned your life because they are sick and tired of hearing it just as you are, and when knowing that you are sick of it and that no matter how much someone loves you, they too are sick of seeing and hearing it over and over again. Hold for them well thoughts, pray, encourage them to get out and about, to do something new, tell them what brings you joy in hope that they too can find joy in the same, and above all listen to them with sincere compassion, never needing to give advice, only encouragement and love by taking the time to care.
