There have been so many pedestrian/bicycle/scooter vs. vehicle accidents resulting in either severe injury or death lately. I realize that many (if not all) of these accidents are due at least in part to a distracted or speeding driver. But I cant help but also notice that when taking my own children to school, I see dozens of kids everyday that are riding their bikes and scooters with no helmets on, riding with no disregard for the traffic (cutting cars off and such) or following basic traffic laws (which also apply to bicyclists) and refuse to use crosswalks or adhere to the signals. If the schools and the RPD were enforcing helmet laws and if we as parents and educators were teaching and reviewing bicycle safety rules/laws with our children then maybe, just maybe, it would cut back on the amount of deaths and serous injuries we are reading about. After all, from what I remember, that is why the law requiring a helmet for all bicyclists under age 18 was passed back when I was a kid.
