There he is. Sibelius. He is a ghost and towering figure of influence in my music. To understand him is to know nature. To listen to his words of music, is to hear a language born in a most rarefied and mysterious air. Heartbreaking and beautiful, The Swan of Tuonela has no account of its creation from the composer. Even the manuscript vanished years ago. The music simply exists as an orphan, packaged in a suite from the genius that is Sibelius. The originating myth of the musics namesake describes a hero that was to kill a sacred swan, yet a fate of premature death at the tip of a poisoned arrow would divert his journey. Later, he would be restored again to life. Introspectively, the music creates a vacuum that we might fill with our own question; what is the meaning of death? Yet in this work, I also see the angled light of Finland. The trees and surrounding nature beckon us to look to shadows in the hopes of finding a lost love only as the sun has set. For even in the midst of finality, might love be reborn?
