There is a TV series here in the UK called Derek. It is set in a nursing home and the main character of the same name is played brilliantly by Ricky Gervais. Derek is an autistic man of around 40 who lives and helps out in the home. It would best be described as a bittersweet comedy, with Dereks literal and direct take on life providing much refreshing humour. His narrative in the programme is often beautiful, simple and profound. In last weeks programme I was moved to tears by how he described how lucky he was to have such a wonderful life where he loved all the people around him and they loved him. He talks about how much more he has than so many people and how he loves his life so much. It was an expression of pure gratitude from someone who, when all else is stripped away, has a deep recognition and appreciation of what really matters in life.
