There is a civil discussion on a question posted by a Local Policeman. He is pondering what a response here should be, if tensions and situations ever become as bleak as what we see happening in communities around the country. His comments will explain that he understands and that his colleagues know how and why things went wrong elsewhere. Pay attention to everything he comments, because it really gives me hope. Particularly a comment by Anna Miller Grabowski that I am quoting here. There MUST become civil dialogue between all the people to make this a better world for everyone. Judgement and persecution of any peoples must stop. Anyone feeling anger or disgust inside, discounting another persons experiences and trials and tribulations will not stay healthy, or make for a healthy community. Anna Miller Grabowski Although it is quite different, I know, I used to have to break up the occasional fight when I was teaching school. The hardest to break up were the fights where students were intensely angry with one another and could not be distracted from that anger. The crowd of onlooking students sometimes encouraged them to continue, especially if they had some part in the anger. While teachers are generally told not to intervene, because they themselves could get hurt, some teachers still physically try to break up the fight. I usually succeeded by re-directing the attention and the mood of the combatants and onlookers. Since it is my personal skill, I would actually dance around and make ridiculous sounds and generally stun everyone with my utterly foolish performance. I dont think that would help police, though, in the case of anger erupting from a community or even from a small number in that community. The difficulty for police is that they are trying to control the anger of people who are angry at them. It isnt a crowd that is angry at corporations or rival sports teams, it is a crowd that is rightfully angry at police, some of whom may even have personal experience with violent and abusive cops. I understand the anger that can arise when one is abused, especially when your loved ones have been abused. People need to feel that they are being heard, and in fact, they actually need to be heard. If I were you, I would address that need. I would set up places for people to record their feelings and experiences and make those recordings available to everyone, and send those recordings to people in power. I would set up places for people to smash things, because sometimes you just have to smash and burn things. Perhaps a police car that no longer functions could be set up for people to destroy, although you would have to figure out liability issues. As has been suggested, police could and should join these protests. Having the police come out and protest for greater accountability and justice would be the right thing to do. I would like very much to see some local police forces not only join but lead the protests and call for better policing, more accountability and for someone outside the system to be in charge of investigating and prosecuting any cops who go outside the bounds of the law and proper policing. https://facebook/groups/chattanooganews/permalink/850691418309441/
