There is a danger that Zimbabwe will slide back into a political crisis, as it is now clear that Zimbabwe has new political drivers who are determined to drive the whole country into political wilderness. Such drivers are Jonathan Moyo and Mnangagwa who have been grilled by other Politburo members after pushing Mugabe to declare 31 July as the election date this morning. Chinamasa has already warned Mugabe about the likelihood of serious repercussions following this morning’s announcement. Today’s proceedings have been going on as if its fiction. Almost 50% of the Politburo members are wondering how it’s going to be possible to go to elections in 6 weeks time, given the intense differences currently facing the politburo. As it stands, nothing as materialised since the meeting resumed. During the day most of the members were looking dejected and unwilling to take part in the whole process, leaving Webster Shamhu, Simon Khaya Moyo, Obert Mpofu and Muchinguri to do much of the talking. Chombo even said “we might as well start packing our bags if we can’t agree on simple issues”. The biggest challenge remained the issues of Women’s league proposal, and the incorporation of G40, the management and arrangements of primary elections which are going to be held in a day which Chinamasa and Sikhanyiso Ndlovu said was not feasible. Mutasa and Herbert Murerwa were very sceptical about the Manifesto drafted by Jonathan Moyo which seems to be more G40 orientated. Wait and see what Rugare Gumbo is going to say, part of it will be misrepresentation of facts. Things have happened so simultaneously that they don’t know what to tell people about their preparation since the election date announcement this morning. However primary elections date has been set for the 24 June.
