There is a huge backlash to the concept of White Privilege. Many people feel very defensive about it and feel the need to justify themselves. But White Privilege doesnt mean what many think it means. It doesnt mean that whites never would have gotten where they are if not for white privilege. And it doesnt mean that others are putting down white people for having white privilege. It simply is a statement of fact in this society. It doesnt mean that white people dont have many problems in life, but it does mean that non-whites have the same problems with the added disadvantage of not being white. No one really blames white people for that. Its just what our culture has become after over 400 years of inequality. White privilege is a simple concept. Our culture, society, and attitudes are the reflection of the history of inequality in our society. The laws, cultural habits, and lingering attitudes are all in favor of white people. Getting an admission into college or an occasional leg up in getting a job is not the cure for this inequality, but it is a necessary step until we as a society recognize the inherent inequality that exists. The only thing that will truly change this society is for people to change their attitudes. That cant happen until people simply acknowledge that white privilege exists. But instead of just acknowledging that simple fact and having a sense of compassion and justice about it, many choose to feel attacked by it. They think that if they admit it, then that lessens their achievements and successes in some way. But there cant be any blame unless there is complicity. Only when these advantages can be acknowledged they can be changed. It doesnt mean anyone gets any less, is less deserving, or is devalued in any way. It just means that all people are valued the same, and all are playing on a level playing field. The more society changes in that direction the less the concept of white privilege will have any relevance.
