There is a little cocktail party game that we opera fanatics love to play. We’re sort of always playing it, whether we realize it or not. It basically amounts to “Who Sang It Best?” It’s kind of like our own casual version of Fantasy Football. And like Fantasy Football, opera has many fantasy players. For example, when picking the best Isolde to perform Liebestod (German for love death), do you opt for old-school divas like Nellie Melba or Kirsten Flagstad, or today’s velvet-voiced superstars – Angela Gheorghiu, Anna Netrebko, Renée Fleming? There have been many consummate sopranos to have performed this role on the stages of opera houses around the world. But if it’s ‘Tristan und Isolde,’ then in my humble opinion it must be the incomparable Jessye Norman. youtu.be/9680zhMmIqM
