There is a lot of material out there on whether we should call ourselves Latino, Hispanic, Mestizo, etc. I reject these labels as a vestige of colonialism, not only having racist overtones, but also as constituting overt racism. The demographic convenience of these labels is outweighed by the prejudice they cause. I feel this way because given the social mores in the Basin and Range Region of Tejaztlán where I grew up, my Mexican/Indigenous, Scottish, Irish, Belgian and Spanish/French ancestry translated to just plain Mexican, even if all four of my grandparents were born in Texas. All that European mumbo jumbo was absorbed into the Indigenous like a squirt of cream in hot coffee. I stand pleased to have been identified so persistently as a member of La Raza de Bronce. Nican Tlaca is what I am; Chicano is what you get.
