There is a lot of misinformation about stainless steel going - TopicsExpress

There is a lot of misinformation about stainless steel going around that I would like to clear up. I have worked exclusively in stainless for over 7 years and sell 15-30 pieces a week. I have sold many pieces to people who thought they were allergic to normal stainless but found they were not allergic to my stainless. Here is why: If you are able to use normal silverware, you are not allergic to stainless steel. Here is how nickel allergies work: Most commonly, people notice nickel allergies where they wear jewelry like earrings, rings and necklaces. Allergic people who work with nickel-containing products, like hairdressers, caterers and metalworkers, also notice reactions on their hands. Nickel alloys are used to create a whole slew of everyday items, like buttons, buckles, zippers and kitchen utensils. Nickel is also found in some 14K and 18K gold, and when you sweat, it draws the nickel out. Stainless steel has nickel in it, too, but its usually bound so tightly that it wont affect even the most allergic person. But very allergic people can react to the nickel present in some food items, which include nuts, chocolate, tea, coffee, beer and apricots. Many times when you *think* you are allergic to stainless, you are actually reacting to the oils that were NOT removed by the manufacturer Or if your stainless was stored next to another nickel-plated metal which has flaked or your piece has a NON stainless clasp or single connecting ring on it somewhere. If you rub down earring hooks or quickly wash stainless bracelets with soap and water before wearing them, you can avoid these allergy problems. People who claim to be allergic to stainless and silver are more likely reacting to the friction burn of wearing heavy jewelry and NOT the actual metal. There is a ton of info on reputable websites about the different grades of stainless and how allergies manifest and why.
