There is a peace that most people would like to see happen in our world, where everyone would get along, live together in harmony, and work for the betterment of all people. Those who speak to promote such a high ideal are applauded and a few are even granted the Nobel Peace Prize when they are judged to have faithfully worked in extraordinary ways, attempting to bring a sort of peace on earth. Jesus is described as the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), yet when He came to this world He promoted, as a top priority, a different sort of peace, an eternal peace with God. After the establishment of this primary horizontal peace of God with man, the secondary vertical peace of man to man could proceed, but along the way division would result, because not everyone would believe the words of the Savior of the world. Yes, as followers of the Prince of Peace,we are to be at peace with everyone, as much as it depends on us. Yet, our goal is to first help them to come to peace with God, who is wiling to forgive them of all their sins when the repent. Declaring that gospel message of hope for eternal peace, however, will bring about division and probably not make you a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins,... to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:76-77,79b (ESV) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Luke 2:13-14 (ESV) Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. Luke 12:51 (ESV) I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 (ESV) As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, Peace to you!” Luke 24:26 (ESV)
