There is a place in the world where dreams are made, where refugees could rebuild their lives and their hopes restored. There is this place that I’ve called home for the last 30 years. A place where a fatherless refugee could afford the luxury of going to school, earn a degree and can feel proud knowing that he is contributing to this country. I live in this place where children can wake up, take the bus, or even walk to school and teachers welcome them to an environment of learning. I live in this place where every day I can take the bus to work with people from many parts of the world and I have no fear for my safety. I live in a place where the company I work for values and appreciates diversity, where holidays are created in honor of hero’s and heroines who helped shape this country. Do you know of a place like this? I do. This place, this place is what I call “My Americaâ€. My America is my hope. My America is my future. My America is what many brave men and women sacrifice so much to serve and protect. My America is a place filled with people who care enough, who are courageous enough to stand up to the wrongs and will fight for what is right. I believe in America because I’ve seen the best in America. Where can former refugees be a Colonel in the US Armed Forces? Where can former refugees who work hard can end up being doctors, nurses, engineers, politicians, scientist, lawyers, actors and actresses, musicians, business owners and much more?. How can I not believe in America, My America when people who lost so much, who has next to nothing can dream, can hope and work hard to make their dreams real? How can I not believe in this America when I am a living testament of America’s greatness? My America is going through some trying times right now, but I believe the army of good, the minds of yesterday, today and tomorrow will make things better. A reminder to the man in the mirror that I am living in one of the greatest nations in the world. This is the America I know! This is “My Americaâ€!!
