There is a serious problem - an epidemic spreading through out the companion dog world. In the past every dog that had a home and family had a job. Something physically and mentally exhausting and satisfying. In todays world we see so many more problem behaviors in canines because we have fallen out of the habit of finding jobs for our dogs as we rush through our crazy lives. This doesnt mean that you have to sign your dog up for search and rescue or sheep herding :-) ! We need to find things that challenge our dogs brain power. Whether it be thinking about how to get Something done, or how to continue doing something for an extended period of time or other things. Stevie has not been hurt or abused, she has no physical ailment that causes convulsions, but she does lack a practice of using her mind and/or relaxing unless physically exhausted. Yes exercise is important, but if that is all you do to get your dog to settle down and they never learn to contain themselves you end up with a bit of a strung out mess. A dog that is physically in amazing shape, but mentally struggles at life. Stevies body is not used to making itself hold still for extended periods of time. She is used to going mach 1000 twenty-four seven unless she runs herself ragged. Where that energy would normally in this scenario be jumping, running around the house, getting into trouble or demanding a walk or play time .... we have asked her to stay on place where she can not do those things. So we see the energy disappearing through her muscle convulsions. Think of it as someone who has a nervous, anxious tick that instead of addressing or learning to relax they just busy themselves 24/7 . When there isnt Any work to be done they fund themselves struggling just to sit still for 5 minutes right? Some might say they could easily succumb to a meltdown... We are teaching Stevie to meditate through her energy and anxiety about sitting still while the world goes on around her :-) . It is hard, but no fault of hers or her owners. It is a mistake many pet owners make without even realizing they are training their dog to be hyper. It gets easier the more you practice and it becomes a habit.
