There is a strong argument to be made that the German Panther was the best tank produced during the Second World War. Obviously, there will never be a consensus of opinion on the subject, but there is no doubt that the Panther was one of the two best tanks of the war. With the other being the Soviet T-34, the tank that inspired the development of the Panther. The Panther was not introduced until the mid-point of 1943 and its baptism of fire came during the largest armored clash in military history: The Battle of Kursk. The new tank was rushed into service before there was chance to work out all of the bugs, and more of them were lost to mechanical breakdowns than to the enemy. The kinks would be worked out and the Panther would earn a well-deserved reputation as a very dangerous opponent. But, the Germans were mostly fighting on the defensive for the last two years of the war, against heavy odds and often without air support. That lack of air support would prove to be the undoing of even the most powerful German tanks, and the Panther was no exception. A well-placed 500-pound bomb will destroy, or disable, any tank in the world.
