There is a tendency among non-Muslim to criticize Islam for its polygamy. But they do not see that polygamy is there in all religions including Hindu, Christians, Jews and Buddha with UNLIMITED wives. They can have any number of wives. Bible says, some of them had more than 100 wives. Islam has brought down this number to four only and that also very conditional. If you cannot maintain justice, then marry only one, that is the directive from Quran Allah swt says :- وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلاَّ تُقْسِطُواْ فِي الْيَتَامَى فَانكِحُواْ مَا طَابَ لَكُم مِّنَ النِّسَاء مَثْنَى وَثُلاَثَ وَرُبَاعَ فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلاَّ تَعْدِلُواْ فَوَاحِدَةً أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ ذَلِكَ أَدْنَى أَلاَّ تَعُولُواْ And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice.......(4:3)
