There is all the difference in the world between religion at the level of communities without a paid hierarchy and the depraved nastiness that comes from its being organized by professionals, particularly when enjoying political immunity. This story is from when Ireland was dominated by the Catholic Church. Think of this every time some corrupt Church official prattles and lies about being for life. (Equal atrocities occurred to Indian children in church run schools in the US and Canada. Kent Nerburns work is a good introduction to that.)
