There is an endless flow of abandoned domestic animals into Australian shelters. An odd and damaging response to this fact is from people who have absorbed the flawed rhetoric of Americas Nathan Winograd. Some of those who have fallen for Winograds claim that there is no overpopulation of dogs or cats have good intentions but are blinded by idealism. Others have a vested interest in opposing measures which would reduce the breeding: measures which include High Volume Low Cost Spay and Neutering campaigns. Those with the dubious motivations are treating cats and dogs as commodities and marketing them as if inanimate products from which they profit in some way, usually financially. Sadly these individuals may use rescue as a cover to earn an income or ego-trip. Concerned American activists are striving to educate the public that shelters cannot adopt their way out of killing if the breeding of cats and dogs is not addressed and curtailed. Nathan Winograd based his myth of overpopulation theory on a flawed survey from which he concluded there are 17 million Americans ready to adopt homeless cats and dogs. The actual estimate is that for every homeless American dog and cat to be adopted, each person would have to take in approximately 6 animals each! Mary Tully is an independent journalist who has researched the methodology (or lack of) Winograd used to surmise that there is no overpopulation of dogs and cats. For those who have heard, and ironically it tends to be the loudest voices who spread it, of the myth of overpopulation: please take a look at the following link: veganmeanie.wordpress/2012/10/25/nathan-winograds-loaded-pet-overpopulation-survey-and-why-you-should-take-it/
