There is an interesting advertisement on todays Lankadeepa on the management external degree program of Rajarata University. Fees per semester is 26,500. There are six semesters. This is not an external degree by any means. This certainly open the flood gate for the commodification of internal degree programs in the state universities. You have to consider Open University separately because it started with a different objective. Indeed this is like making Rajarata also an Open University. We have discussed this with the UGC also. We argued that it is completely against the existing system of external degrees, where the university does only registering the candidate, examinations held and certificate awarded. In this case there are modules preparation and seminars for which fees are levied. Therefore this is not an external degree anymore. It is parallel internal degree program. We will definitely see in the future the priority will be given to these kind of programs because this will be a money machine for greedy academics and administrators. UGC agreed to our argument, but as usual they are doing nothing. It is unfortunate that the dean of the management faculty who is behind this was an active FUTA member during the TU action. I think minister is fully behind this. His vision for the solution of lecturers salary issue is you earn your salary. So this is a wonderful way to earn your salary. So this is the new Rajarata Civilization.
