There is an old story about a partner in a law firm giving an ethics lesson to his young daughter. He said that a client had come in that morning seeking advice on a matter. It took about five minutes to solve the problem, and he informed the client that the charge would be $100. “What!” the client exclaimed. “That’s a rip-off.” The client angrily pulled a hundred out of his wallet, slammed it on the desk, and stormed out. “When I picked up the money” said the father, “I found out that the client had accidentally left two one-hundred dollar bills.” “So what’s the ethics questions?” the daughter asked. “Well,” replied the father, “do I keep the extra hundred myself or do I share it with my partners?” The new ethics? Whatever happened to the old ethics?
