There is enough So Ive been on this obsession about greed. - TopicsExpress

There is enough So Ive been on this obsession about greed. Greed is the one Seven Deadly Sin that feels like the most destructive. Look at the shelves of your local supermarket, and think about how annoyed you get if theyre out of, say, your favorite breakfast cereal, or the kale in the produce section doesnt look as fresh as it should. Then think about a family in Sierra Leone living on less than a dollar a day, anxious to know if there will even be enough food for their children that day. Or imagine if your family lived in Syria or Iraq in a bombed out hovel, wondering if the next day will bring rebel attacks or collateral damage from a U.S. airstrike. Greed makes these stark contrasts possible. We agonize over which iPhone to buy, while large populations of the world cannot find clean drinking water. Think about Dubai, much of it dredged up out of the Persian Gulf to create an artificial pleasure palace. It was built largely by indentured slave labor, imported from India. The skyscrapers and luxury hotels, crowded with designer boutiques, and the residences perched on sand spits with ocean views belie the unbridled greed of the oil sheiks who financed them. Its like Las Vegas. You go to Vegas or Dubai to wander air conditioned buildings, gamble or buy trinkets without thinking of the real human costs of the ground you stand on. It keeps us quiet. Like the world created in the Matrix, it masks the squalor and venality. It takes real courage to look beyond the mask, to see how far down the rabbit hole it goes. The sad truth is there is enough food to feed everyone, there is enough income to care for everyone. There is enough, if we only share--mamie van doren.
