There is going to be a lot of Sandy on my newsfeed today. Dont get me wrong, I dont hate that, that storm unraveled our lives. Its a huge part of the story of our lives. We were lucky to have evacuated and not to have been there to witness her causing the destruction but were no less affected by what she did and mourned what she destroyed of our home the same as everyone else. That being said, what she destroyed was heartbreaking but our hometown, our community, our Rockaway, rose above her and came together like it never had before. We are truly stronger than that storm. This year, after moving to Florida, we are living in a storm of our own. Its this year that, especially with Mikey on hospice, that I find myself doing what I havent done yet in 2 years. I am mourning some of the stuff that Sandy destroyed. I always swore I never would, I always said that its just stuff and it can be replaced. For the most part it could... and if we werent faced with the journey we are on I dont think Id even be fazed that the outfit that he came home from the hospital in, his favorite pairs of pjs in every size, dvds and stuffed animals and hand puppets that we searched for months for, his first Christmas outfit, the blanket that he was covered in on the air ambulance flight from St. Pete back home in October 2008 are all gone. Im beyond grateful for the online albums of pictures from when all 3 of my kids were born and Im blessed to have a good memory but I will never get that stuff back and Mikey is on hospice now. Sandy took that stuff, those tangible items that I would be able to hold when I need to later and they are gone. Its just stuff but I look at Mikey and know where we are on this journey of his and thats when I hate that Sandy came and did what she did. So, this year, as I watch each breath he takes, Im beyond grateful we are here and able to create more memories for as long as we can but Im taking a few minutes to be upset that I wont have that stuff to hold when I need it.
