There is intrinsic value in having a JOB - regardless of the salary. I think THAT is the thing that Liberal-Democrats - and the generations they have spawned and taught - do NOT understand. The value is in having a REASON to get up in the morning, to bathe and get dressed, and to tackle a new day, The value is in having friends and co-workers and interacting with people and customers from all walks of life. We learn, at least for a moment, that there is something more than our OWN selfish wants and desires. We come to know how to relate to other people. The value is in learning - how to DO something new. The value is in a job well done - accomplishment of an unfamiliar task. And, the honest self-acknowledgement of our achievement. Knowing that we did something worthwhile It is from that we gain TRUE self-esteem. The happiest little guy I ever knew was a grave-digger. But, he knew the job HAD to be done. And, HE was good at it. Straight sides, 3 by 7, EXACTLY 6 feet down with a FLAT bottom. Nobody wants to lie tilted for Eternity, he said. He never made a lot of money but he was PROUD of his work. He buried rich man and pauper alike. He was the last man to let them down. I think the absolute WORSE Liberal idea is that of a minimum and hourly wage. Basically, it says that YOU and your time has value REGARDLESS of what you achieve and accomplish. When I FIRST went to work at the Kinston Daily Free Press, I had NO idea of what my hourly wage was. All I knew was I made $67.50 a week. I was judged on the number and quality of the stories I wrote and the accomplishment of the tasks I was assigned. I worked as few hours as 30 and as many as 60. I was paid the same. But, the paper HAD to go out EVERY day. It was my JOB to do my part to achieve that. And, I LEARNED! - from Miriam Maynard and Jake Strother - HOW to write But, more importantly - what GOOD writing was. I had no formal education. I never went to college save for a year at LCC in drafting. I didnt want to sit stooped over a table the rest of my life. I actually had FLUNKED Senior English and Algebra in High School and graduated in Summer School and not with my class. I had originally applied for a job as an ad salesman but. the guy I was to replace decided not to quit. So, they stuck me in the newsroom late at night winding teletype tapes and taking scores for the Sports Editor, Jack Stevens, over the phone until an opening in advertising became available. But, they somehow discovered I had a talent for writing and they nurtured it and advised me. I FOUND my calling and lifes work. I worked my way through EVERY job in the newsroom. And, after starting a failed weekly newspaper, writing the Bicentennial book, managing a printing company and working in radio, became the EDITOR for 10 years. From there, I became a bank Marketing and Public Relations Director for a couple of major banks and eventually on my own as a small business consultant. My point is that NONE of it would have happened had I not had that first crappy little night job for LESS than minimum wage at the time. I would have never MET people who took me under their wing and counseled and helped me. I never would have discovered my talent. I might have ended up like a LOT of the poor kids I grew up with in East Kinston - dead or in prison. It was NOT the edumacation, but the JOB that saved me. :-
