There is no doubt that Sardar Patel was a formidable man, the best home minister, an iron man, that India could ever have got. Sadly, contemporary politicians only use his name as per their convenience and in order to conjure public emotions with an eye on the ballot box. Why cannot they strive to become like him? When they talk of legacies, are they really following his legacy? Are they serious of creating their own legacy, an example which can be emulated by future generations? The generation before us and we have been blessed enough to have remarkable leaders whose example was noteworthy? But what about our future generations? Are we not leaving a strong example deficit for them? Whom should they look up to? Scamsters, fraudsters, money-mongers? We need leaders with a strong transparent outlook, an honest personality and a verve to lead by deeds, not by words alone. The real homage, tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel will be to become iron men ourselves, not merely debating on the stronger points of his legacy.
