There is no religious justification for the horrible murders that took place in Paris yesterday. Just because a person appears on television and writes op-eds, does not mean he is proficient in navigating the deeper sciences of theology. I and a large number of trained Imams, unconditionally denounce these acts of treachery and we extend our prayers to those who lost loved ones and the people of France. Those who invoke one incident from the life of the Prophet (sa) are neglecting the fact that many of his illustrious comanions originally opposed him, and insulted him, like Umar, Hind, Thumama, Ikrama, Abu sufyān and even more who did so and never converted. They were left unharmed, and in some cases, their very homes were declared as safe havens by the Prophet (sa). The default of our Prophets character is mercy, as was noted by Imām Rāzi. News outlets would do well to ask folks their religious credentials before handing them the mic, the pen or a page. We stand united with the people of France in condemning this horrible crime.
