There is no such thing as a safe brand of essential oils. - TopicsExpress

There is no such thing as a safe brand of essential oils. Essential oil safety has really got nothing to do with the brand of oils you use. Most poor quality oils are not especially hazardous, they simply dont do much of anything, and there is no single brand of oils that has a monopoly on quality. There are many brands with great quality oils! Safety is about constituents - the ones that are naturally there. Like Cinnamon bark oil and its 65-75% cinnamaldehyde (potential allergen); Oregano oil and its 60-80% carvacrol (potential irritant); Lemongrass oil and its 70-80% citral (potential allergen and teratogen); Wintergreen oil and its 96-99% methyl salicylate (potential for drug interactions, teratogen); Sassafras oil and its 70-90% safrole (potential carcinogen). Natural does not mean safe, it just means natural. Sometimes other constituents do reduce the toxicity of the major ones, but they generally do not take it away. If they did, drinking natural bitter almond oil with its 3% of cyanide would not be lethal. So many people died in the 19th century (some suicides, some accidents), that the natural oil has not been sold since 1890. You can still buy bitter almond oil, and it is widely used for food flavoring, but the cyanide has been taken out. Sassafras oil is prohibited for use in foods. Not everyone reacts in the same way to essential oils, but safety guidelines are there to protect you. And remember - not every risk is apparent - you dont know that hepatotoxicity or carcinogenicity or teratogenicity are happening when they are happening - unfortunately, theres no warning sign.
