There is nothing for me quite like standing beside someone hovering at the far edge of this life, literally reaching his arms toward the spirit world, seeing things one usually doesnt have the privilege of seeing before reaching such a threshold. Standing so close, the rest of us can almost feel a breeze from the other side—the other side seeming, for a time, almost palpably immanent—even moreso for meeting us in the most mundane of circumstances: a hospital bed, a dilapidated body—no place of glamours, no place anyone aspires to go. I stand in awe—so close! Oddly, as i havent read anything from the Bible in a long time, verses from Matthew come to me as i write that: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven... So the last shall be first...
