There is some indication that The Arkenstone, as seen in the film as treasured by Thorin, was in fact a Silmaril (Three Silmarils were crafted by Feanor, the greatest of the Noldor, whose name meant Spirit of Fire. Tolkien derived it from an old english word eorclan, and eorcan, from which is derived Arkenstone of The Lonely Mountain. The first element is airkins which means Holy. This stone was likely the Silmaril from The necklace of the Dwarves, or Nauglamir. It was a carcanet of gold and set with gems uncounted from Valinor. The Silmaril was a crystal with a glow from within and none who were not worthy could hold one. One was lost and the two that were captured back from Morgoth, one was flung into the depths of the earth and the other into the sea. The Arkenstone was likely the Silmaril discovered by the Dwarves.
