There is something inbred into the human spirit that turns us toward conquest. We like to control. Social criticism has long warned us against the vices of our extreme consumerist culture. Under the guise of human progress, some of our most cherished resources are being discarded. Natural beauty is surrendered on the altar of suburban sprawl. Human contact is gobbled up by sterile technological communication. Architecture and the arts are forced into the crippling demand of function over form. Our pragmatism might appear helpful, offering certain improvements, but the price paid for this forward movement is costly. With such conquering advancements, something is lost – a bit of beauty, a bit of who we are. In the moment, we forget that humans are not ultimate. There is something – Someone – more.
