There is something to be said for children to learn early how to read and write....and there are skills that are foundational and are essential building blocks for a childs educational success but reading with fluency, understanding graphemes, recognizing proper nouns, and learning about silent e, does not have to be committed to memory at the age of 5. I value the research that supports learning through imaginative play, citizenship and life skills that children obtain through free play. Listen, I know there are people that think teaching kindergarten is fun, easy, crayons, naps, circle time with songs and puppets..... To that I say, teaching as a whole is hard. Its mentally and physically draining but its very rewarding but the expectations that are set nationally do anything but take in to consideration what is developmentally appropriate and emotionally beneficial for 5 year olds! This report is amazing. Sure hope someone listens.
