There is something very haunting to me about being so scared, so terrified that the only thing you can do is scream. Most movies tell us to hold our breaths and stay hidden and quite. Many movies use gore and fantastically painful deaths, or they hint at the prolonged horror in someones last moments. The scream is used in many ways as just part of the atmosphere, a lot like an ambulance in a city scene. There are very few movies that allow us to look at the extended terror of knowing its over, that moment when the complete disbelief that this is actually happening to me is the affirmation of your horror and pain. Three examples have always stood out for me. In Texas Chainsaw Massacre when she is burst through the window screaming, her fear is her last motivation, i can imagine pieces of glass in her body and her knees bent and broken, what i cant imagine is her horror, even trying to comprehend it is scary. In The Searchers... not a scary movie at all, there is a scene when the family is being surrounded by Native Americans and are about to be attacked and killed. The daughter who is setting the table for dinner lights a candle on the table, the mother quickly slaps it off, the daughter at first confused slowly realizes what is happening and screams in fear, the mother slaps her to be quite. Immediate horror, one second life is ok the next you are dead and you are just waiting for it. One film that produced this hair raising sensation is The Blair Witch Project, I dont need to see anything, I just know that i can feel horror, i can sense it, it makes me scared, i dont know what it is, i just know it is coming after me. The final four minutes of the film are a work of art. https://youtube/watch?v=cmYsRcLMvO8
