There once was a nation governed by the rule of law. The people were free to produce and were able to keep the fruits of their labor. In this way the people prospered and the nation grew strong and powerful. But in their prosperity the people failed to be diligent in guarding their freedom. The government, because of a greedy few, also became more powerful and the politicians began to exceed the powers of the constitution. The wealthiest of the people learned that they could elect politicians who would use the office they held to their own benefit, taking land from some and giving it to others. Agriculture subsidies were introduced, followed by housing and welfare programs. It wasnt long before taxes rose and controls over the private sector were imposed. Consequently, those who produced could no longer prosper. Productivity declined and shortages arose. The people began to riot in the streets. Not surprisingly, the government could no longer repay its debts and the nation collapsed and fell into ruin. It was the end of the once mighty Roman Empire... or was it America?
