There seem to be many possible factors that lead to someone taking their own life. I talk about depression a lot because that is what Isa suffered from (that is the only ailment she was diagnosed with) and I suffer from it as well. Statistics say that 90% of people who die by suicide have some form of mental illness...depression being the most common. I also see so much information about bullying being a factor. Isa experienced that at times, too. Prolonged and intense mistreatment can wear down a persons self esteem and result in severe depression..which can lead to suicide. This seems to be an epidemic in this generation. Brain injury is yet another factor that can cause suicide. There is research going on right now surrounding this. It has affected NFL players substantially but American soldiers have the highest suicide rate among any other subgroup. It is critical that more research is done on this issue. Absolutely critical. It is my hope, my wish and my goal that the issue of suicide moves to the forefront of scientific research in the coming years. Awareness, education, exposure, compassion and funding are ways we can help. We can share our stories, speak up when someone says something inappropriate about suicide, gain perspective by looking at statistics, give financially to the cause, and open our hearts to people affected by mental illness, brain injury, suicidal tendencies or the loss of a loved one by suicide. We can each make a difference. Open your heart and open your mouth. No more shame and no more silence. Happy New Year, everyone! -Tina (Isas mom)
