There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding by policy on bike - TopicsExpress

There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding by policy on bike lanes and cycling in the city. Those who take such a strong issue with my position seem to either be misinformed, have been misled or are simply unwilling to see both sides of the argument. I want to make it very clear that I am not anti-cyclists or anti-bikes. I own a bike myself and ride it often. I simply believe that the current Lord Mayor has got the balance wrong and has created a transport system where the supply is disproportional to the demand. The Frome St bike lane is excessive and poorly designed infrastructure, installed in a rush at a high cost to ratepayers. It has been to the detriment of pedestrians, motorists and importantly, to emergency services who are often unable to access the roadway due to congestion. Never has the Council received so many constant complaints about a single piece of infrastructure causing accidents, damage to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. I completely accept that many people are passionate cyclists and I support this. I simply ask cyclists to accept that not everyone shares their passion for cycling and for some people, commuting by bike is simply not possible or practical. Being car-friendly does not mean being bike-unfriendly. I want to create a well-considered transport system that caters to everyone, with less traffic congestion and faster commute times. I want to create better, safer network of bike lanes that works harmoniously with pedestrians and motorists, instead of rushing to build poorly thought out infrastructure.
