There should be no need nor place for charity in a civilized society. The vision of those like Abbott is for the state to relinquish all responsibility for provision of public services and welfare to the poor, to leave people once again cap-in-hand to the god squad for their survival. Our family histories, replete with all our stolen ancestors, scream to us to do everything in our power to fight such an appalling 19th century vision of the future! It has already taken hold to such a large extent in social service provision, where everyday horror stories are being heard about religious social providers. Say no to the charity model and the empires of misery being built by wealthy religious groups, on the backs of the poor. Instead, we need to demand secular government, with fair taxation and proper public health, education, housing and social service provision for all. This is really the front line!
