There should not be a fare on the Staten Island Ferry, even if its only applied to tourists. Its our only free connection to and from the borough and we want to encourage people to come to Staten Island and enjoy what we have to offer, especially with the new projects coming to our North Shore. Placing a fare on the ferry would be wholly inconsistent with that goal of attracting tourists and investors. Staten Island is in dire need of transportation options to meet the population and economic development needs of today. We already see most of the $250 million in profit from the Verrazano Bridge tolls funding other parts of the MTAs transportation network and its unfair to the people of this borough. Others need to stop looking to Staten Island as an ATM. By the way, the Rockaways has 1/4 of the population of Staten Island yet even has a rail link connecting to rest of city.
