There sure has been a helluva lot of protesting and unrest in the country.....and around the world....over the last year. From OCCUPY WALL STREET, to Ferguson and the recent demonstrations in Hong Kong, the parade of images conjure up a plethora of poignant pictures of the late 60s for me.....and surely for many others my age! So, this week, I had to go with another classic 1969 song that, while somewhat light on lyrics, is heavy on attitude. Written by drummer and singer SPEEDY KEEN, the original recording of the song was produced by The WHOS PETE TOWNSHEND, who also played bass on the record and wrote the instrumental arrangements. Guitarist JIMMY MCCULLOCH, who later played with PAUL MCCARTNEYS WINGS, also played on the track.....when he was only FIFTEEN years old! Its a very cool and universally symbolic song that had a really distinctive sound for the one-hit wonder band, resulting in its use in several movie soundtracks and television commercials in the decades since its release. Probably the most notable motion picture appearance of the song was the first one....the fantastic 1969 comedy THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN, starring PETER SELLERS and RINGO STARR. (Also making appearances in the film were JOHN CLEESE, RAQUEL WELCH, RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH, CHRISTOPER LEE and ROMAN POLANSKI.) The song truly punctuated the premise of the film in its final moments! So, enjoy this memorable song.....with a very profound social statement....SOMETHING IN THE AIR by THUNDERCLAP NEWMAN. I chose a video that paired up some cool late 60s imagery with the song. Have a PSYCHEDELIC weekend, everyone! youtube/watch?v=lSsq_j2euig
