There was a bomb hit the butchers shop just a few shops north of Woolworths. It was the L.C.M.The cellar walls were tiled and in a way it almost looked like a swimming pool. It was filled with water and a dinghy was floated atop the water. People threw pennies in to try to sink it to buy a Spitfire, It was called the Spitfire Fund I believe. I think eventually someone threw some bricks in as it seemed almost unsinkable.Whether a Spitfire was ever bought with the bootie I really have no idea. Pennies were much larger then...We used to call them clods. If you 30 in one of your pockets you walked a wee bit lop sided. The L.C.M. moved up the road by Staggs. I know because I worked for the L.C.M . which was London Central Meat.
