There was a favorable north wind at sunrise, permitting the Morgan to sail out of the harbor, although she was towed simultaneously by a small tugboat for the first few miles of the trip to Newport, R.I. Crew scrambled aloft, shaking out cotton canvas sails. On deck, others hauled lines to brace and sheet the sails home. Read more about the CHARLES W.
