There was a huge turnout today to see Patty Mills return home to Canberra and receive the keys to the city! He was joined by fellow San Antonio Spurs teammate Aron Baynes and the NBA Championship Larry O’Brien Trophy, which they’ve affectionately nicknamed #Lazza. As our Deputy Chief of Mission Tom Dougherty said, “Patty’s success is an inspiration to all young Australians, but he’s especially an inspiration to Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander youth.” We’re especially pleased that like so many Aussies, Patty and Aron had the opportunity to train and study in the U.S., an experience we hope has contributed to their success. It is so wonderful to see how far these athletes have come in their sporting careers and we hope many more young Australians will join them! Patty’s parents looked on proudly as ACT Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Senator Kate Lundy handed over the keys. It was a fitting tribute to these Aussie stars celebrating the Spurs’ fifth NBA Championship – they inspire us all!
