There was a lot to celebrate in this evening’s State of the Union Address. I liked that President Obama reminded Americans that things are better. Our economy is growing at its fastest pace in 15 years, unemployment is lower than before the financial crisis, more people have health insurance than ever before, and gas prices are lower. But we know that not all Americans are having an easy time. The President laid out a vision for the nation’s future with a focus on middle class economics. As we emerge from the recession we can choose to strengthen our nation by helping middle class families make ends meet and giving Americans new opportunities to get ahead and succeed. Progressive tax cuts for the middle class, free community college for all, and guaranteeing paid family leave, are ideas that will help families in my district and across the country. The President is not naïve about the challenges of working with Congress and neither am I. One area where we should be able to find common ground is rebuilding our crumbling roads, bridges and ports. From my experiences on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the bipartisan Ports Caucus, I know that this issue cuts across divides and unites local economies across the country. I have been working on legislation to build the 21st century infrastructure that has already received bipartisan support, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get this done for the American people.
