There was a man in Jericho named Zacchaeus, a tax collector and very rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but being short in stature, he couldn’t see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree. Luke 19:1-4. This story of Zacchaeus rings so true. Each of us, in stature or any other way, is too small to adequately see Jesus. We look for his voice, his vision, his compassion, his hopefulness. Each of us yearns to hear the words Zacchaeus heard, “Today salvation has come to this house.” One of the sycamore trees we can climb, one of the helps to see Jesus, is our awareness of how gifted we are. The awareness that all we have and are comes from God opens our heart, frees us from selfishness, and encourages to notice and support the many other people likewise seeking God. Salvation comes to their house too.
