There was a man who lived in a great city, but for whatever reason this city was not very well lit and had a lot of dark areas around town. The man had grown accustomed to the darkness of the city and really liked the way he looked in the shadows. He said to himself “I really like the way I look here in the shadows, this must be who I am. Also in the city there is a very nice resort hotel called “The Kingdom of Heaven”, in fact it’s the best hotel in the entire world. The owner, who is very generous, invites everyone in the city for a free stay for all eternity. However, in the main lobby of the hotel and in all the rooms are these ultra-bright lamps that bathe every last square inch of the hotel in the purest, brightest light. As the man tries to walk into the hotel through the entrance, the light changes the way the shadows, which he has become accustomed to, look like upon his face. Also his eyes start to hurt because it is so bright. He does not like this at all, so he becomes angry and complains to the hotel staff saying “Hey, I was invited for a free stay for all of eternity. Why is this bright light changing the way that shadows reflect off my face? I really like the way I look in the shadows and don’t want to stay if this bright light is here. The hotel staff then replies “We are sorry sir, the reason why this hotel is the best hotel in the world is because of the bright light. We cannot get rid of it”. “What? I don’t like these lights! I don’t like the way I look in the light, I like the way I look in the shadows. The way I look in the shadows is so much better; you see, The shadows are who I am. In the light, I must now clean my face and change my clothes. Why do you hate me? “Sorry Sir, we do not hate you at all and want you to stay; but we cannot put out the light because the light is what makes this hotel the finest in the world. The man then said “Well then, why does this light hate me? The hotel staff replied “The light cannot hate you Sir, but the light shows you what you really look like. The man never enjoyed his free stay at the hotel because he did not like the light. So then, this man is like those who have become accustom to their sin and think that their face in the shadows is what they really look like and who think that life is meant to be lived in in the shadows way rather than in the light.
