There was a so-called prison ship that came to Cincinnati. It was named the Success. In the book Remembering Cincinnati (p72) it is shown as a photograph while moored to the Ohio River shoreline. The caption claims the ship was built in 1790 and it traveled the Ohio River as an exhibit detailing barbaric conditions prisoners endured, being transported from England to Austraila (Van Diemens Land / Tasmania). The ship used for the exhibit was indeed called the Success but was not built until 1840. The visit to the port of Cincinnati was on or about March 31, 1918. This picture is one I saved from a collection of a cousin to my grandmother, who had no offspring, prior to it being tossed in the trash. You can read about the Success here: eriewrecks/shipwrecks/success/success.html She is home to the fishes in Lake Erie now.
